Dog Reverse Coughing vs Choking: How to Tell the Difference
It can be difficult to know whether your dog is experiencing Dog Reverse Coughing or actually choking. While both situations may seem alarming, they are very different and require different responses.
Dog Reverse Coughing is a harmless reflex in most cases. During an episode, your dog may make repeated snorting or honking sounds, stretch its neck, and rapidly inhale through its nose. These episodes usually last less than a minute and stop on their own.
Choking, however, is a medical emergency. A choking dog may paw at its mouth, struggle to breathe, drool excessively, or become distressed because something is blocking the airway. Unlike reverse coughing, choking does not typically resolve within a few seconds.
If your dog is reverse coughing, remain calm and gently comfort your pet until the episode passes. Avoid putting your fingers into your dog's mouth unless you are certain an object is causing the blockage.
If your dog cannot breathe, collapses, or continues to show signs of distress, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
Knowing the difference between Dog Reverse Coughing and choking can help you react appropriately, reduce unnecessary panic, and ensure your dog receives timely care when it truly matters.
